We have to bring ours in at the end of the fall and bring it back out in the spring.

I wouldn't recommend drinking it even after boiling. There could be chemicals, bacteria or other nasties that simple boiling won't remove. You would need to set up a several tier filtration system that would include such things as flocculation/sedimantation, centrifugation, decanting, pasteurization/sterilization, activated carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, and distillation in order to remove everything before making it safe. It is best to leave the rainwater for the plants and for other non-drinking uses.

what if you boil the water before drinking it, wouldnt that make it more suitable for drinking

Yes, that is one reason. It helps reduce the dependance on tap water and decreases the impact of water runoff to streams (which often contain a lot of chemicals and trash). A rain barrel can potentially save 1300 gallons of water! You can use that water for watering your garden, flowers, washing your car*, whatever you can think of that isn't for drinking.

*remember to use a biodegradable soap when washing your car!
