Go around the house barefoot to stay cool. Rather than cranking the air conditioner, take off those slippers and socks!

To help keep our house cooler in summer, and reduce our heating bills in the winter, we had low E film applied to all of our windows. You can see through it beautifully but it cuts down the heat and glare from summer sun while trapping heat in the winter! I don't know how we ever lived without it.

For those in northern climates - I plant deciduous trees on the south facing side of my house. In the winter there are no leaves so the sun can warm up the house. In the summer when the leaves fill out they shade my house and keep it cool. On the north facing side, a tight row of cedar (coniferous trees) provide a great winter wind break.

In the winter... don't crank up the thermostat. Instead, wear a sweater to use energy better!

Here's a tip for keeping your house cool in summer. I live in an older house and the heat upstairs where I sleep at night used to be unbearable. Since I started keeping my curtain drawn and windows closed during the day though, I no longer have to sleep with a fan running all night long. If a loss of light is a concern, buy light-coloured roman blinds to let the light through. Incredibly effective

Use bubble wrap in your window coverings to dramatically increase you windows r-value. If you don't mind the look you can leave the bubble wrap exposed, or hide it between two layers of curtain fabric.

Use child safety plugs to stop air leaks through exterior wall electrical outlets, air leakage is one of the largest areas of energy loss through building envelopes. If you want to splurge use child safety outlet covers that have spring loaded panels that slide over the outlets when not in use!
